Alfred Wallis's St Ives in the 1880s

Alfred Wallis painting of St Ives in the 1880s

This beautiful 1930s painting by Alfred Wallis is one of many he made depicting St Ives as it was when he first moved there in the 1880s.

Anti-clockwise around the painting are the remains of the 1860s wooden pier, Smeaton’s Pier, luggers moored in the harbour, seine boats on Porthminster Beach with nets full of pilchards attached to the capstans, the buoy marking Hayle Bar, Gwithian Sands, and two luggers sailing towards Godrevy Lighthouse.

Painting titled 'Three Ships and Lighthouse' - part of the collection at the Pier Arts Centre.
