NO. 1 - FISHING SMACK

Alfred Wallis painting of North Sea fishing trawlers from Blyth

Throughout December I’ll be sharing different types of vessels painted by Alfred Wallis. I’ve no idea how many he captured in his work, so I'm excited to find out.

I’m starting with this painting of two fishing smacks, their sails marked with Blyth harbour registration letters. These were North Sea trawlers, the kind Wallis would have seen while fishing with the Mount’s Bay fleet in the 1870s.
