At the Zander Collection in Cologne

Huge thanks to Susanne Zander, Lisa Arndt and Mathis Henne of the Zander Collection in Cologne for granting me access to their exceptional collection of paintings by Alfred Wallis. These comprise the largest and most important public collection of Wallis’s work outside the UK, and equal the Tate’s holdings in number and quality.

Spending time with these works and having the opportunity to discuss the re-examination and re-contextualisation of so-called “naïve” and “outsider” art was a memorable and informative experience.

The Zander Collection - founded by gallerist Charlotte Zander, who began collecting self-taught art in the late 1950s - is a non-profit organisation that aims to challenge and expand the canon towards a more inclusive, global, and multi-perspective understanding of art history. I’m very grateful to have experienced their vision in such a tangible way.

With the Zander Collection's permission, I will be posting copyrighted images of their Alfred Wallis paintings over the next few weeks.
